Maintain and test fixed fire protection systems


Application

This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to conduct maintenance, fault finding and in-service testing of fixed fire protection systems.

A fixedfire protection system is a set of components that detecta fire, alert personnel and/or occupants and extinguishthe fire, they are actuated by smoke, flames or heat.

Competency in this unit requires the ability to plan work, maintain fixed fire protection systems, conduct in-service testing and to report on all completed work tasks. Individuals will, in general, work under supervision in an electrical, electronic and/or mechanical equipment repair workshop or on site.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Note: Workplace practices

The application of the skills and knowledge described in this unit of competency may require a licence or training permit to practice in the workplace, where work is carried out on gas and electrical installations. Additional and/or other conditions may apply under state and territory legislative and regulatory licensing requirements.

Plan and prepare for work

Requirements including scope of work and assigned roles are identified and confirmed with appropriate personnel or by site inspection, in accordance with workplace procedures

Work, Health and Safety (WHS)/Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) regulations, legislative requirements, industry standards, codes of practice, manufacturers’ specifications, environmental obligations and workplace procedures are reviewed for work preparation

Maintain fixed fire protection systems

Replacement equipment or items are inspected, in accordance with workplace procedures, to confirm compliance with fire protection system specifications

Modifications or alterations are undertaken, in accordance with workplace procedures and fire protection system requirements

Conduct in service testing
